Fryston Times & Your Mining Memories

We’re delighted to be part of a new project that will involve workshops, storytelling, gardening, and creativity to help people reconnect with their heritage and wellbeing, whilst celebrating and reimagining Miners’ Welfares, once the beating heart of coalfield communities.

From halls and reading rooms to sports fields and allotments, these spaces offered opportunities for relaxation, celebration, and social connection.

Spectrum People is closely connected to mining heritage, with its base in Airedale, Castleford (Tieve Tara), being the former pit surgery for Fryston Colliery.

Mobile Exhibition Celebrating Jack Hulme's Photography

Jack Hulme was a Fryston resident, recognised late in his life for his huge collection of photographs taken of normal day-to-day life in the pit village, as well as big events and historical occasions.  In the last few years of his life, he was exhibited both locally and abroad, was interviewed by the BBC and others, a play was written about him, and a book was published about him.

We decided to create a mobile exhibition to move around the local district and beyond, both inside and out, using vinyl banners and indoor display boards. The first display was launched at Airedale Library on 28th November, at the turning on of the Christmas lights.

With support from the Esmee Fairbairn Collections and Communities Fund, run by the Museums Association, we’re proud to join Ciswo Charity, Creative Minds, NCMM and Huddersfield University to celebrate their history and reimagine their future.
