Appletree community garden

At Appletree we strive to be a welcoming, accessible, and inclusive community garden space. We are situated in Agbrigg, Wakefield. Everyone is welcome. You can spend time outdoors, enjoy fresh community grown food, meet new people, and learn new skills.

No matter what your experiences, strengths, or abilities, we’d love you to be a part of who we are – whether that’s discovering or sharing your knowledge about the joys of sowing, planting, and harvesting; learning new ways to cook; building, mending, recycling and reusing; or simply sharing in conversation and enjoying the garden atmosphere.

Appletree community garden was the original site of allotments available to the community in Agbrigg. In 2015, it became a community garden. This has transformed from an overgrown site into a beautiful garden space open to everyone in the community. This was done with the help of Spectrum People, Wakefield Council, other local organisations and several volunteers.

An incredible amount of work took place, including clearing the site of several tons of debris, planting trees, installing raised beds. Continuous work is done to maintain and carry on improving the site, such as the installation of paved walkways to improve accessibility, outdoor kitchen, a small pond, hibernaculum and a children’s play area. Appletree also gives sanctuary to 7 chickens and 2 ducks.

Our most recent addition to the space is a compost toilet with disabled access. There is a continuation to make more new additions to make the space more welcoming to anyone in the community.  If you have any further suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact us or let a member of staff know.

What happens here?

Appletree has become a hub of activity for the community. The garden is currently open 3 days a week for anyone to come along and join us for gardening, a friendly chat or just to enjoy the great outdoors with a cup of tea!

As well as being open to the public we provide for local groups such as NCS, Prince’s Trust and Askham Bryan’s FLEX programme with the space to develop skills.

Appletree has been host to many events over the years from family fun days to sessions run by local organisations such as Open Country.

In 2021 an incredible 11,119 hours were logged by our amazing volunteers
